More than 85 organisations – grantees of the MacArthur Foundation On Nigeria initiative converged on the 27th of July at the Exclusive Serene Hotel, Wuye, Abuja for this year’s Biannual Cohort Meeting to exchange notes and share with Foundation staff results and outcomes of their work. The meeting was preceded on the 26th of July by a training workshop on Communications Strategy for Media and communications officers of grantees.

Also this year Grantees were encouraged to exhibit their outputs such as publications, audio visual works and cultural artworks. Juritrust Centre for Socio legal Research and Documentation showcased two recent publications – Vol One of ACJA learning Tools – The Workbook On ACJA For Investigators And Prosecutors (a training manual for facilitators and Participants) and The Compendium of Law Notes Vol,1

The meeting which was hybrid in nature commenced about 10:00 am with welcome and introductions by Dr. Kole Shettima, Africa Director. More introductory remarks were made by Kenneth Jones, Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer/Chief Equity Officer. During the first session, each of the On Nigeria cohorts  shared project results, anticipated legacy, and contributions to the On Nigeria strategy with Foundation staff. The Cohorts – Behavioral Change, Criminal Justice, Joinbodi and Media and Journalism made presentations on work done so far, highlighting achievements, challenges, legacies and gaps yet unfilled. The presenters for each Cohort were pre-selected. PWAN and CLEEN Foundation represented the Criminal Justice Cohort at the presentation session.

The second session kicked off with Josh Mintz, Vice President Legal, who elaborated via zoom, the legal requirements and obligations of the Foundation which impact the guidelines to grantees on financial reporting, use of foreign exchange gain, and re-granting. His Presentation was followed by that of Phillis Hill who gave more insights into the approval process for re-purposing grants.

Stephanie Platz, Managing Director, On Nigeria Program gave the closing remarks, appreciated the great work done by grantees and looked forward to the October Grantees conference.
